Shorts weather, Christmas lights. Pitt Street Mall hangs 80,000 lights and ten giant stars overhead, and the Martin Place tree glows with more than 110,000 LED lights and a colour-changing star. Elsewhere, look for light projections and a floating Christmas tree.
Martin Place Christmas Tree
Martin Place is home to the tallest Christmas tree in NSW, lit with over 110,000 LED lights and topped with a 3.4-metre colour-changing star. Look closely for 330 baubles and 15,000 Australian native flowers, banksias and waratahs among them. A light show runs every 15 minutes at night, and it's free.
Darling Harbour's Rockin' Christmas
Darling Harbour's Rockin' Christmas floats a 10-metre Christmas tree on the water and fills the precinct with free concerts, light tunnels, Santa's Workshop, and lawn games in Tumbalong Park. Santa arrives by jet ski, with elves on flyboards, a sensible ride for a summer Christmas. Look for Saturday night fireworks over Cockle Bay.
Pitt Street Mall Canopy of Light
The Pitt Street Mall Canopy of Light hangs 80,000 lights over the mall between Market Street and King Street, with ten giant 2-metre stars in the mix. The colours are programmable, so the canopy keeps changing hues as you walk. It's free, and it makes a bright backdrop for photos.
Queen Victoria Building Christmas Decorations (Sydney CBD)
The Queen Victoria Building decorates its three historic shopping levels around a 20-metre tree inspired by the Wollemi Pine, with First Nations artwork created with Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative. Look for light and sound shows, an augmented reality albatross on Level 2, and Santa's grotto. Looking is free; the shopping is up to you.
Christmas at the Cathedral
Christmas at the Cathedral turns the forecourt of St Mary's Cathedral into an evening festival, with light projections retelling A Christmas Carol across the cathedral's facade. Browse the artisan gift stalls, grab food and drinks, and catch the live entertainment and roaming performers. Entry is free, and the projections are the main event.
Manly Christmas Festival and Lights (Manly)
Manly's Christmas Festival and Lights strings light installations along the Manly Corso, the suburb's main promenade. Add carollers and local bands, market stalls with handmade gifts and seasonal treats, festive crafts for kids, and a chance to meet Santa. It's free, and the sea is never far away.
Wundrful World of Christmas
Opposite the QVB on Market Street, Wundrful World of Christmas is a 50-minute trip to the North Pole with live actors, animated characters, and interactive sets. Ride the elf-piloted elevator, sort toys, hear a story from Mrs Claus, and post a letter to Santa. Snow in Sydney? Only in here.
